Diving
Martinique is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on its East side and by the Caribbean Sea on its West side. It is also flanked by two deep channels: to the South, the Saint Lucia Channel, and to the North, the Dominica Channel. A true maritime crossroads, the waters of Martinique harbor a richly diverse marine flora and fauna that delight scuba divers. It is possible to observe a great number of tropical fish species, beautiful gorgonians and coral heads, sea turtles, and occasionally dolphins…
Over the years, some spots have gained international fame, and many enthusiasts from various backgrounds wish to visit them… This is particularly true for the shipwreck cemetery in the bay of Saint Pierre, as well as Diamond Rock, a true emblem of Martinique, and the Pearl in the north and Pointe Burgos in the south.
Black Cove Beach
Surrounded by the steep slopes of the nearby hills and enveloped in lush vegetation, the small cove of Anse Noire presents a landscape quite different from the southern beaches of the island. More wild, more intense.
Nestled between two cliffs plunging into the sea, it reveals itself from the top of the rocky peak that separates it from its neighbor. A lovely stretch of black sand of volcanic origin, generously shaded by majestic coconut trees.
Anse Noire is renowned for the beauty of its underwater landscapes and the richness of its aquatic life, and you may even catch a glimpse of a sea turtle.
- Scuba diving with turtles
- Kayaking to visit the bat cave
- A long hike (3.2 km elevation gain)
Useful information:
Getting there by road: At the summit of Morne Bigot on D7 between Anse à l’Ane and Grande Anse d’Arlet, take the small road that descends towards Anse Noire and Anse Dufour.
Don’t linger in the late afternoon, or make sure to bring a good mosquito repellent.

Balata Garden
All paradises are gardens, and it is no coincidence that, during a visit to the Balata Garden, the magic of the place evokes astonishing feelings in visitors.
In 1982, Jean-Philippe Thoze, a horticulturist, landscaper, and artist at heart, returned to the roots of his childhood in his grandparents’ Creole house. From there, a passion for botany was born, leading him to the four corners of the globe. The garden, organized around the family home with its typical Creole architecture, is the result of a perfect alchemy between a return to his origins and an atypical artist. Your gaze must constantly adjust to the palette of tropical colors as you wander among the heliconias, hibiscus, bromeliads from South America, porcelain roses, heliconias, anthuriums, and of course, wild orchids… A must-see in Martinique!
